Josh Lyons Riding Clinic a Piece of Cake at LUCAR Farms
Kim Robitaille, owner at LUCAR Farms in Clarence Creek, ON Canada, hosted a training symposium and riding clinic with Josh Lyons that began August 6th and continued through the 10th.
A certified John & Josh Lyons trainer, Robitaille was looking to provide a fun and educational event to the local horse community.
She said, “People had been asking me, ‘What is it like to ride with Josh?’ or ‘What’s it like to train with Josh?’ and the timing just felt right to bring him here.”
The two day symposium was geared towards a crowd of spectators who were in attendance to learn various horsemanship skills and principles from Lyons, such as teaching a horse how to confidently load in the trailer.
“In a symposium, we bring out an unbroke horse,” Lyons said. “We go through and show our principles, our concepts, our training ideas and different ways that you can train the horse in a safe and controlled manner.”
The riding clinic, which went for 3 full days, was a more personal time of training and designed for riders to bring their own horse for one on one coaching with Lyons in a small group setting.
Each rider came with different goals in mind for themselves and their horses.
“I’d been to a Josh Lyons clinic before with another horse,” said Sue Dunstan, one of the participants. She shared that she had found Josh’s training quite helpful in the past, and this time was seeking to improve her green horse, Shania, at the LUCAR Farms clinic. After the end of the first day of the riding, Dunstan noted that Shania had already made noticeable improvements.
Lyons covered many basic principles with the riders during day one of the clinic, such as speed control through serpentines and circles, later moving into exercises to soften the horse’s nose and give to the bit. He encouraged riders in their learning experience on multiple accounts by saying with a smile, “It’s a piece of cake.”
By late afternoon, everyone was a bit tired and warm from the hot sun, but feeling happy with their accomplishments. Horse Family caught up with Josh Lyons, Kim Robitaille and a couple of the participants after Day 1 to hear what they had to say:
“You couldn’t ask for any better people,” Josh spoke of Kim Robitaille and her husband Pat during the interview. “We’re hoping to make this an annual event, so hopefully I’ll be back next year,” he added.
“It [LUCAR Farms] is just a great place to come and relax,” Robitaille said. “Anyone is welcome to come here and visit us.” (See a complete set of photos from the event here.)
